MĂ–TLEY CRĂśE bassist Nikki Sixx is commemorating a major milestone in his life: 25 years of sobriety.
The 67-year-old musician took to Instagram today (Thursday, July 2) to share an image and message reflecting on this achievement.
Sixx credited his sobriety with giving him a life he never thought possible.
He wrote, "It's hard to wrap a lifetime of lessons into a few paragraphs, but one thing has never changed: sobriety gave me a life I never imagined was possible." Sobriety allowed Sixx to become the husband, father, and friend he is today.
The rocker acknowledged that recovery isn't just about leaving behind vices but also discovering new opportunities.
He stated, "Somewhere along the way, I realized recovery wasn't just about what I had to leave behind.
It was about discovering everything that had been waiting for me on the other side." Sixx has spoken publicly about his struggles with addiction and near-fatal drug overdose in 1987.
However, he credits a recovery program for helping him transform his life and relationships.
In a recent post celebrating nine years of sobriety in July 2013, Sixx wrote: "For me, taking away the substance just gave [me] an honest view of who I had become and then the healing started." He added, "I do believe without any program to help, many are just dry drunks and there is always a danger of them going out again.
I've been there." Sixx's message emphasizes that sobriety gives one strength yet also allows for taking care of mental health.
His words aim to encourage others struggling with addiction, reminding them that they're not alone.
When asked about his near-death experience in 1986, Sixx described how he believed people were coming to get him after shooting enough cocaine, plunging into psychosis.
He recounted this as a scary and terrifying time in his life.
MĂ–TLEY CRĂśE's singer Vince Neil has also battled with alcohol addiction, having been involved in a drunk-driving accident that killed drummer Nicholas "Razzle" Dingley of HANOI ROCKS in 1984." As Sixx celebrates this milestone, he emphasizes the importance of taking care of mental health and seeking support systems.
His story serves as an inspiration to those struggling with addiction.
