Fans of heavy metal, hardcore punk, and related genres have long been told by parents, teachers, or religious leaders that these styles are not music but noise.

However, many artists and fans alike attest to the therapeutic value of aggressive soundscapes in times of crisis.

A new documentary film, Heavy Healing, seeks to dispel common misconceptions about heavy music's role in healing processes.

Featuring interviews with Jesse Leach (KILLSWITCH ENGAGE), Lou Koller (SICK OF IT ALL), Jaret Reddick (BOWLING FOR SOUP), and others who have relied on extreme music to cope with illness, mental health challenges, or physical trauma.

Heavy Healing has been accepted into the ReelAbilities Film Festival in New York City and will screen as part of the festival on Saturday, April 25 at 7:00 p.m.

and Monday, April 27 at 7:00 p.m..

The film will also show at the New Jersey Punk Rock Flea Market on April 11 and at the Punk Rock Museum in Las Vegas, Nevada on April 18.

Heavy Healing director Howie Abrams notes that many musicians have been forced to cope with various disorders, but their reliance on extreme music has helped them remain motivated during recovery.

The film aims to inspire viewers through personal stories of survival and healing facilitated by heavy music.

Additional screenings include New Jersey Punk Rock Flea Market (April 11), Punk Rock Museum in Las Vegas, Nevada (April 18).\
